Design and Technology
At Nelson Mandela School we provide opportunities for children to develop their Design and Technology capability through creativity and imagination. We aim to give children the opportunity to combine their knowledge and understanding from other subject areas into exciting realistic and stimulating contexts for learning. Children are involved with working with a variety of different materials and components in a range of areas of experience. We use differentiated focused tasks to develop the understanding and skills of particular techniques such as cutting, joining and fixing. Design and Technology is seen as an integral part of the school curriculum and is supported by a comprehensive scheme of work that is constructed as a series of projects for each year group.
Cooking and nutrition is taught in every year group for one half-term. Pupils are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and encouraged to gain understanding, confidence and enjoyment in cooking and healthy-eating. They build an understanding of where food comes from, including growing and harvesting produce form the school garden.
